Pope: Enough With Slaughters in Iraq
Pope: Enough With Slaughters in Iraq
The Associated Press | Sunday 16 March 2008

Vatican City - Pope Benedict XVI issued one of his strongest appeals for peace in Iraq on Sunday, days after the body of the kidnapped Chaldean Catholic archbishop was found near the northern city of Mosul.

The pope also denounced the five-year-long war, saying it had provoked the complete breakup of Iraqi civilian life.

"Enough with the slaughters. Enough with the violence. Enough with the hatred in Iraq!" Benedict said to applause at the end of his Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter's Square.

Faith and War - by Cindy Sheehan
Faith and War
Cindy Sheehan

A friend of mine, who is Chair of the Economics Department, invited me to speak to the students and faculty at the University of Dallas (where the Veterans for Peace convention was that I spoke at the day before I went to Crawford on August 6th, 2005), which is a small, non-culturally or non-racially diverse, Catholic college.

Surprisingly, my friend Sam, received little protest over inviting me, but there was a “Support the Troops” rally in the room next to where I spoke. Some Camp Casey friends accidentally went into that room and only heard the speaker call me names like “scum” and he called the rest of the people at my event “peace fairies.”

I was heartened to find the first three rows of my speech were filled with young people who were smiling and vigorously nodding their heads at everything I said. Most of the audience clapped or laughed in the right places so I was feeling pretty good. However, I was a little sad when there were some snide snickers when I had the unmitigated gall to call Iraqis “human beings.”

During the “Q and A” part, the first question I received amazed me. Now, I was raised Protestant and received an excellent training in the Christian scriptures and I know after being a Catholic for 25 years and a Catholic youth minister for nine of those years, that the average Catholic does not know a great deal about the Bible as most of their religious training is in the tenets of the Catholic faith. Here’s how many Catholics quote scripture: “It’s somewhere in the Bible,” when, in my experience, many times they are actually quoting: “Poor Richard’s Almanac.”

“SPREADING THE WORD”

Welcome & reading: Bob Richards
An overview of our Sacramento Chapter: Pat Scott

In our last meeting we had a breakout session on possible outreach actions which will present NSP to the community and to begin to share our positive vision. As the result, we are dedicating the body of this meeting to understanding the NYT ad/petition as one of our best tools for educating people to “An Ethical Way to End the War in Iraq .” Many people have expressed the desire to actually do something. So here's our first plan. This outline and many of the materials including our banners and signs may also serve as the basis for other issues such as ecological sensitivity, the Global Marshall Plan, the New Bottom Line, etc.

CAIR CONDEMNS BIN LADEN'S PRAISE FOR 9/11 HIJACKER
CAIR CONDEMNS BIN LADEN'S PRAISE FOR 9/11 HIJACKER

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 9/11/07) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today condemned a new video by Osama bin Laden in which the terror leader eulogizes a 9/11 hijacker.

SEE: Bin Laden Praises 9/11 Hijacker in Anniversary Video (Bloomberg)

In a statement, the Washington-based Islamic civil rights and advocacy group said:

"The despicable actions of the 9/11 hijackers should be repudiated by all Muslims, not praised as examples to follow. There can be no moral, ethical or religious justification for such cowardly attacks on innocent civilians. CAIR joins with Americans of all faiths in mourning the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and asks that we all use today's anniversary to enhance our efforts to repudiate religious extremism and to promote mutual understanding. "

CAIR issued a joint American Muslim statement of condemnation within hours of the 9/11 attacks and published a similar statement in a full-page advertisement in the Washington Post just days later.

Death sparks call to unity
After Lake Natoma assault, diversity summit is set today.
By Crystal Carreon - Bee Staff Writer

Hundreds of supporters are expected this afternoon at the West Coast Diversity Summit in Sacramento to unite in the name of Satender Singh and bring grass-roots groups together against the hate they blame in the death of the young Fijian immigrant.

"It's about building bridges," said Nathan Feldman, of the cable access show Being Gay Today, who is organizing the forum at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. "This is pulling the community together."

The summit, organized months before the attack on Singh, has since refocused to unite community resources and set up wider networks to respond swiftly to acts of violence, Feldman said.

He also hopes it will serve as a public outlet to vent the emotions sparked by Singh's death, which came after a July 1 attack reportedly preceded by homophobic and racial slurs.

A Muslim woman has filed a discrimination suit against a national chain of jewelry stores, alleging that she was "enthusiastically" recruited to return to work at a Fairfield shop in 2006 but then turned away after managers saw she had begun to wear a head scarf.

Shereen Attia, who studies nutrition at California State University, Sacramento, had previously worked part time for two Whitehall Jewellers stores at the Westfield Solano Mall in Fairfield beginning in December 2004.
'SiCKO' Premieres on Skid Row
'SiCKO' Premieres on Skid Row
Tuesday, June 26, 2007 5:11 PM

By Rev. Andrew J. Bales, President of the Union Rescue Mission

How often does a big time Hollywood Movie premiere on Skid Row? Never in anyone’s memory, until last night! It started out as a wild idea to shut down one of the toughest streets in America and show the movie, Sicko, to some of the folks who were featured in the movie, but would not likely have an opportunity to walk a red carpet or even see this powerful film in theaters, and huge-hearted filmmaker Michael Moore made it all happen just outside the back doors of Union Rescue Mission.

We closed the streets down at 4:00 P.M.; men began building a platform and back drop for a 37 foot Screen. It was a bit windy so our Mission staff weaved together several tarps as a wind break. 600 chairs were set up in a theater setting on the street, and a magnificent projector and deck were brought in by the Weinstein Company, and what seemed impossible happened.

San Julian St. became a walk-in theater! Michael Moore personally came to salute these folks who live a tough life on the streets. I introduced Michael as a man who shared with the House Judiciary Committee that his motivation for making this film about healthcare came word for word from the book of Matthew, chapter 25. Matthew 25:31-46 (ESV):
