Moving to the Right is Wrong
submitted by billl on Saturday, June 10, 2006 - 11:08pm PST
I just stumbled across this from Arianna Huffington in 2004 from The Next DNC Chair: Why You Should Care
As cognitive psychologist George Lakoff told me: "Democrats moving to the middle is a double disaster that alienates the party's progressive base while simultaneously sending a message to swing voters that the other side is where the good ideas are." It unconsciously locks in the notion that the other side's positions are worth moving toward, while your side's positions are the ones to move away from. Plus every time you move to the center, the right just moves further to the right.
And if middle-of-the-roadism is such a great vote-getter, why don't we see Republicans moving there? In fact, framing the political debate in right-left terms is so old, so tired, and so wrong that we need to resist all temptation to do so. There is nothing left-wing about wanting corporations to pay their fair share rather than hide their profits in PO boxes in Bermuda, or in ensuring access to health care now rather than paying the bill at the emergency room later.

Senator gets rousing reception at convention
By David Callender, http://www.madison.com
LA CROSSE -- Wisconsin Democrats will need to do more than tap popular discontent with President Bush and the Republican-controlled Congress if they want to win this fall's elections, U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold told a cheering audience at the state Democratic Party Convention on Friday.
Democrats will not win "if we play it safe," said Feingold, who has staked out some of the boldest positions in the U.S. Senate by voting against the war in Iraq, calling for a deadline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops there and proposing that lawmakers censure the president for his domestic spying programs.

Grieving Parents Launch Campaign to Prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome
submitted by Tjadendevries on Thursday, June 8, 2006 - 6:28pm PST
Within days of the May shaking death of their 15-month-old daughter, Scott and Lorena Juceam began a campaign to prevent shaken baby syndrome. Their effort has already led to a larger-than-life warning to parents.
The Juceams launched the Hannah Rose Foundation and approached Clear Channel Outdoor advertising for ad space.
"It's to educate people about us, about our daughter Hannah." Scott Juceam told News10.
[...]
For the past week, a 48-foot-wide billboard with Hannah's picture has greeted the estimated 126,000 people who pass by daily on the Capitol City Freeway. ... In addition, fifteen Sacramento-area bus shelters display Hannah Rose Foundation posters. All carry the simple message "don't shake your baby."

Molly Ivins: Now, back to the real crisis
AUSTIN, Texas (CREATORS) -- Thank goodness the Republicans are around to tell me what to worry about. The flag-burning crisis -- here in Austin, there's that pall of smoke rising from the West every morning (it's from an area called Tarrytown, where they burn hundreds of flags daily).
Ripple of Hope
40 years ago today, Robert Francis Kennedy gave what came to be known as his Ripple of Hope speech
It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

Impeach Alberto Gonzales? Why, yes!
submitted by bonniesac on Wednesday, May 31, 2006 - 10:59am PST
California Congressman Darrell Issa is one of the most conservative Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee. So it should come as no surprise that he offered an appropriately cautious and responsible solution for the Constitutional conflict created when members of the Bush administration ordered federal agents to raid the Capitol Hill office of a sitting member of Congress.
"We have the power to impeach the attorney general," Issa told Tuesday's Judiciary Committee hearing titled: "Reckless Justice: Did the Saturday Night Raid of Congress Trample the Constitution?"

Bowen Urges Veterans To Take Steps To Protect Themselves From Identity Theft, Including Freezing Their Credit Reports
submitted by billl on Thursday, May 25, 2006 - 9:31am PST
SACRAMENTO – In the wake of what privacy advocates are calling the biggest breach ever in terms of the number of Social Security numbers exposed, California State Senator Debra Bowen (D-Redondo Beach) – the author of California’s landmark identity theft prevention laws – urged veterans to take steps to protect themselves from identity theft and renewed her call for national laws mirroring California’s identity theft prevention statutes.
“The 2.3 million veterans who live in California have special rights and tools they can use to avoid becoming identity theft victims, and I hope every one of them who has had their Social Security number released in this latest breach takes the steps necessary to protect themselves,” said Bowen. “If your Social Security number is exposed to criminals, the only effective way to stop them from using it to get loans and credit in your name is to freeze access to your credit reports.”

Womenomics
A guide to Womenomics
The Economist

The future of the world economoy lies increasingly in female hands
Why can't a women be more like a man? Mused Henry Higgins in "My Fair Lady." Future generations might ask why a man can't be more like a woman. In rich countries, girls now do better at school than boys, more women are getting university degrees than men are and females are filling most new jobs. Arguably, women are now the most powerful engine of global growth.
Cracking the Hillary Code
Cracking the Hillary Code

... the buzz surrounding the film adaptation of the Da Vinci Code is reaching a crescendo. It's everywhere -- billboards, magazine covers, Tv comercials, ... Tom Hanks and Audrey Tatou racing around Europe trying to uncover the stunning secrets of the Holy Grail, and of how the patriarchy of the church systematically removed the Sacred Feminine from Christianity.
The tag line: "Seek the Truth"
Meanwhile on the political front, I've been trying to crack The Hillary Code.
Unlocking the latest Clinton cryptex, we find not a papyrus map but other kinds of symbolic clues: Making headlines with her warm assessment of Bush. Partying with a who's who of the GOP party elite, including Karl Rove, Karen Hughes, Tom Delay, and Bill Frist.
