Hands Off the People of Iran Campaign
Dear Mr Bacher,

I am writing to ask for your support for a recently
launched campaign, Hands Off the People of Iran.

The initiative for this campaign has come from Iranian
organisations and individuals. Our aim is to oppose
any attack on Iran and at the same time give
solidarity to the fight of the Iranian people against
their oppressive, theocratic regime.

Hands Off the People of Iran’s founding statement can
be read on our website at www.hopoi.org and, if you
agree with its aims, we would very much appreciate
your support as a signatory. You can sign up via the
form on our website or by emailing me to confirm your
intentions.

AUGUST PEACE EVENT

Will the US produce more nuclear bombs, making them more likely to be used, or will we use the opportunity before us to eliminate nuclear weapons? On the one hand our country is spending more money on nuclear programs than we did during the Cold War. And as more nuclear technology becomes available, we could see a future with 20 or 30 countries armed with nuclear weapons. On the other hand, there is now a historic opening to work to actually eliminate nuclear weapons. Grassroots power has forced Congress to start to question the nuclear status quo. Congressmembers are asking for a real debate over the future of nuclear weapons. Will we use this moment of grave danger to fulfill this great promise? To find out more about US plans to build new nuclear weapons and to be inspired to act, please attend!

SOA/WHINSEC Vote Update

SOA Watch has received NEW information, that WHINSEC has a secret weapon and that the Pentagon's public relations campaign has won some influence with the Representatives who have already told you they will vote YES.

Yesterday was a busy day in Congress and they were not able to finish the Foreign Operations Appropriations bill, so we have bought more time to counteract the Pentagon campaign and persuade Congress to vote YES to cut funding for the SOA/ WHINSEC.

Beginning at 10:00am on Thursday, June 21, the amendments to the Foreign Operations Appropriations for fiscal year 2008 will be debated, including the McGovern - Lewis (GA) amendment to prohibit funding for the SOA/ WHINSEC.
"Before He Invades" - video by Michael Stavros

"Before He Invades" is a short, musical, sassy indictment of the Bush administration and embraces the growing movement to Impeach! The music is based on "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood and performed by my friend Craig Lehman and my two daughters, Angelina & Lacey. I (Michael Stavros) wrote the words and made the video. Check it out. You are welcome to add it to your website, my space or blog, etc. I hope you enjoy it.

Peace,
Michael

To everything there is a season.
A time for war, a time for peace.
Ecclesiastes, Hebrew Scriptures

I wish I could say I thought of something profound as I saw the president and his wife's picture on that billboard on Hwy 317 in my rear view mirror on my way out of Crawford today. I will be back for the final weekend farewell to Camp Casey on July 6th, but I won't be back as the owner of property there, or as a leader of the American peace movement.

The protests that were Camp Casey I and II that evolved into the five acres on Hwy 317 (Lone Star
Parkway), which was known as Camp Casey III, definitely were effective and served a relevant purpose in the national discourse of the pros and cons of the war. In an occupation that was and still is kept far from apathetic American eyes, summer '05 was one of the first times the cost of BushCo's Iraq fiasco was made public and many people sympathized and resonated with and some even traveled for miles to be with the Mom in the ditch.

When I announced that I was going to put my five acres up for sale in Texas, the horrible anti-peace; anti-American group, Move America Forward announced that they would buy it to erect a "Memorial." This group still cheer-leads and supports a war where our troops are clearly being misused and mal-treated by their civilian leadership and celebrates each death as a sacrifice for the neo-con, obscene, and Orwellian idea of "freedom." Move America Forward is still collecting money for their memorial, which will never be built on my old property and if they really wanted
to buy it, they wouldn't have sent out a press release---they just wanted a few more minutes of fame off of my misery!

Camp Casey, A Final Gathering
From Cindy Sheehan...

This is not a formal invitation, but just a heads up to let everyone know that we will be having a final Camp Casey gathering on July 6-8th in Crawford and a 50th birthday party for me.

I sold the property yesterday to Bree Walker, a progressive radio talk show hostess from San Diego, who wants to make it a Memorial/Peace Garden/Monument. Which relieves me greatly!

I hope you all can make it to Camp Casey...

Love
Cindy

Former TV News Anchor, Bree Walker, to Purchase 5-Acre 'Camp Casey' Property Near Bush Ranch
Will Keep Property Open to Public as 'Legacy for Peace'; Sheehan to Appear Live in Studio on Walker's Program Saturday...

Former Los Angles newscaster turned progressive talk radio host, Bree Walker will be purchasing Cindy Sheehan's 5-acre property near the Bush ranch in Crawford, Texas, The BRAD BLOG has learned.

Walker, currently a resident of San Diego, was previously a television news anchor in Los Angles and New York. She confirmed the news to us moments ago, in an exclusive interview, that she intends to keep the property "as a ground for freedom and peace" and is considering erecting a memorial there for troops killed in Iraq. She hopes to create a meditation garden on the grounds and to keep it open to the public.

"I'm cashing out my capitalist corporate stocks and buying into a legacy of peace," she told The BRAD BLOG moments ago. Sheehan will be selling the property for the same price she purchased it for so as not to be seen as profiting from the sale, Walker explained.

Iraq War Veteran’s March Around Capitol Draws Hundreds of Supporters
By Dan Bacher

A Iraq War veteran dressed in desert fatigues has been marching around the State Capitol in Sacramento 24 hours a day since 8 a.m. on Memorial Day to remember U.S. troops killed in Iraq and the futility of the war itself, spurring hundreds of supporters to walk with him and offer him support.

The veteran, who prefers to remain anonymous to concentrate people’s attention upon the nearly 3,500 U.S. soldiers that have been killed in the Iraq War, plans to take one lap around the capitol for all U.S. troops killed in Iraq, including about 362 from California. He expects to reach the 362 milestone sometime Wednesday evening.

The veteran is carrying a yellow ribbon in memory of each fallen soldier, as well as reading the name and brief biography of each soldier on every lap he makes around the capitol. Marchers accompanying him are carrying white sheets of paper with the names of Iraqi civilians killed in Iraq since 2003 to remember the estimated 685,000 Iraqis that have perished since G.W. Bush invaded the country in March 2003.

Cindy Has Earned a Rest
Cindy Has Earned a Rest
By William Rivers Pitt | t r u t h o u t | Columnist | Wednesday 30 May 2007

My alliance with Cindy Sheehan began with an exchange of emails several years ago after I made mention of her son, Casey, in an article about the expanding number of American troops lost in Iraq. She wrote to thank me, and to correct me on some small details about precisely when and how Casey died. Our friendship grew from that moment, and over time, she was always there to hand me a good kick in the pants whenever I needed one.

Last March, Cindy's long-belt of road-bound activism brought her to Boston, where she spoke at a rally commemorating the four-year anniversary of the war. My bar is a favorite spot of hers; I'd brought her there twice before during previous visits she made to Massachusetts, and both times I saw the same woman of passionate energy and commitment who sat in a Texas ditch until the country could no longer ignore her - or the war. The light was in her eyes, the hope that things could be changed was in every word she spoke and, as ever, the sorrow from her loss was there like a shroud. She was motivated, optimistic, cynical, tired, inspired and resolute, all at the same time.

When I brought her and some of her friends out to have a beer and relax last March, however, I saw a different Cindy.
