NSA has massive database of Americans' phone calls
Updated 5/11/2006 10:38 AM ET
By Leslie Cauley, USA TODAY

The National Security Agency has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans, using data provided by AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, people with direct knowledge of the arrangement told USA TODAY.
The NSA program reaches into homes and businesses across the nation by amassing information about the calls of ordinary Americans — most of whom aren't suspected of any crime. This program does not involve the NSA listening to or recording conversations. But the spy agency is using the data to analyze calling patterns in an effort to detect terrorist activity, sources said in separate interviews.
It's Almost Unanimous
Confessions of a Repentant Republican

"I supported George W. Bush in the presidential election in 2000, believing then that he best reflected my love for America and for our tradition of liberty. I supported the war in Afghanistan. In March of 2003, I believed that the invasion of Iraq was justified based upon pre-war revelations presented to Congress and to the American people. Acordingly, the indictments contained herein apply, first and foremost, to myself.

Sacramento anti-War/anti-Bush/pro-Democracy Rally

This Saturday, March 11th, from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm, we'll build upon the spectacular, colorful, energetic gathering of political voices that we had at 16th & Broadway last weekend. (see http://sf.indymedia.org/news/2006/03/1725300.php )

Once again, we'll join forces and hold a major anti-war/anti-Bush/pro-democracy rally, rain or shine.

Saturday's event is the second of three consecutive Saturday rallies at 16th & Broadway. As we approach the third anniversary of the US-led/UN-opposed invasion of Iraq, let's increase the momentum of our demand to end the war!

City and County of San Francisco call for Impeachment of Bush & Cheney
Resolution to Impeach Bush-Cheney Passes 7-3
by Ken Werner, Trinity Plaza Tenants Association (TPTA), 2006-03-03

On Tuesday, February 28, 2006, the City and County of San Francisco became the first large municipality to call for the impeachment of George Bush and Dick Cheney, by a 7-3 vote. Supervisors Sean Elsbernd, Michela Alioto-Pier, and Sophie Maxwell cast the dissenting votes (Sup. Jake McGoldrick was absent for the vote). Sup. Chris Daly commenced his introduction of Agenda Item 27 with "I initially thought this ... would be a noncontroversial piece of legislation. Perhaps it still is, maybe not-a-unanimous-vote piece of legislation. But if you remember when we took our oath of office we swore to uphold the Constitution."

Coretta Scott King dies at 78

ERRIN HAINES
Associated Press

ATLANTA - Coretta Scott King, who worked to keep her husband's dream alive with a chin-held-high grace and serenity that made her a powerful symbol of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s creed of brotherhood and nonviolence, died Tuesday. She was 78.

The "first lady of the civil rights movement" died in her sleep during the night at an alternative medicine clinic in Mexico, her family said. Arrangements were being made to fly the body back to Atlanta.

She had been recovering from a serious stroke and heart attack suffered last August. Just two weeks ago, she made her first public appearance in a year on the eve of her late husband's birthday.
The Spark

One hundred days after Emmett's death, a black woman, Rosa Parks, refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery city bus and was arrested for violating Alabama's segregation laws. The Women's Democratic Council, under Jo Ann Robinson, called for a citywide bus boycott and asked a young, 26-year-old minister to help ...

NAACP Mourns the Death of Rosa Parks

NAACP Mourns the Death of Rosa Parks, Longtime Alabama NAACP Worker and Mother of the Modern Civil Rights Movement

Bruce Gordon, President and CEO, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, today said the death of Rosa Park, 92, on Monday marked the sad end of an era.

“Rosa Parks served as an inspiration to generations of African Americans and all people of good will,” said Gordon. “More than an icon, Mrs. Parks is symbolic of the thousands of courageous NAACP workers who fight for civil rights in their communities.”

Julian Bond, Chairman, NAACP Board of Directors, said: “Rosa Parks was truly the mother of the modern civil rights movement. She was NAACP Secretary in Montgomery when she sat down in order to stand up for civil rights, and her quiet example demonstrated to millions new ways to confront the evil of segregation.”

A Historic Debt Deal : The ONE Campaign
Together as ONE, we have helped do something incredible!

This past Saturday, the U.S. joined together with other wealthy nations to free millions of people in some of the poorest countries from crushing debts. The finance ministers from the 'Group of Eight' or 'G8' nations agreed to write off billions of dollars of debt, and in return for cancellation, the qualifying countries will invest these savings in their own people -- to help with more schools, health clinics and wells.
Gang hysteria goes national
I thought that I'd share this Associated Press article from today on the topic of gangs.

It seems to me that extreme examples of gang-related crimes are being used as a justification for doing nationally what's being done right now in West Sacramento...
