DQ University is not only the only Tribal University in California but also the only university in the nation that teaches Natives and Chicanos/Chicanas without requirement of Indian Blood Quantum. The University's education is embedded in Self Determination and the recognition of OUR story.

4 years ago, it lost its accreditation due to poor management from their board of trustees. Their board is represented by a few selected officials from one nation of native Americans who are holding a monopoly over the school curriculum.

I can not begin to explain to you the gravity of the situation, but I can say that 3 of their students who continue to live on the campus and participate in regular classes, even without accreditation, were arrested for trespassing on February 20, 2008 (please see link below for footage of arrests). They have since been released through bail, but the harm has been done.
ACLU, Karuk Tribe and FOR File Suit Over Censorship of Klamath Dams Ad!
by Dan Bacher

The ACLU, Karuk Tribe and Friends of the River are standing up for freedom of speech in their campaign to remove four environmentally destructive dams on the Klamath River, owned by Warren Buffett-owned subsidiary Berkshire Hathaway.

The ACLU of Oregon this morning filed a lawsuit against Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet), alleging the public bus company has violated federal and state constitutional free speech protections in its rejection of an advertisement it deems “political.” The lawsuit was filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court, on behalf of the Karuk Tribe of California and Friends of the River Foundation, who had sought to place an ad on TriMet buses regarding the damage done to salmon runs for decades by electricity-generating dams, owned by Portland-based Pacific Power, on the Klamath River.

Hundreds Begin The Longest Walk 2: An Indigenous Peoples Spiritual Walk for Survival From California to Washington, D.C.

SACRAMENTO, CA – On Tuesday, February 12th, representatives from hundreds of Native American nations participated in a ceremonial and cultural commencement for the Longest Walk 2, the 30-year anniversary of the historic 1978 Longest Walk. More than two hundred participants of the Longest Walk 2 have embarked on a five-month long trans-continental journey on foot from San Francisco. The walk will arrive in Washington, D.C. on July 11, 2008, bringing attention to issues of environmental injustice, protection of sacred sites, cultural survival, youth empowerment, and eroding Native American rights.

Jimbo Simmons, a representative of the International Indian Treaty Council, original walker, and an organizer of the Longest Walk 2 addressed a crowd of more than 200 people from the steps of California’s Capitol in Sacramento. “Thirty years ago we marched from this capital and that’s what we’re going to do today. We are walking for our land and our people.”

Tribal Flush: Pechanga People "Disenrolled" en Masse

By MARC COOPER
Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - 12:00 pm

John Gomez Jr. parks his silver family van in the back row of one more anonymous strip mall off California’s Highway 79, an hour and a half southeast of Los Angeles, on a windswept ridge overlooking the Temecula Valley. Gomez, his dark hair barely betraying a sprinkling of gray at his temples, steps out of the van and walks away from the mall, to a barren dirt lot marked off with adobe walls.

Back Restoration of Winnemem Wintu Recognition by Supporting AJR 39
Action Alert: Back Restoration of Winnemem Wintu Recognition by Supporting AJR 39

You have a unique chance to help right an historic wrong by supporting Assemblyman Jared Huffman's bill, AJR 39, to restore recognition of the Winnemem Wintu (McCloud River) Tribe. The bill will codify the State's de facto recognition of the Winnemem Wintu as a California tribe and encourage the Federal Government to correct their administrative error and restore the tribe's Federal recognition. I encourage you or the organization you represent to send a letter ASAP to support the tribe.

In September 2004 the Winnemem Wintu held a war dance at Shasta Dam to protest the Bureau of Reclamation's plan to raise Shasta Dam, a move that would flood the tribe's remaining sacred sites. The federal government wants to raise the dam in order to increase the capacity of Shasta Lake to provide increased water exports from northern California and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to Westlands Water District and southern California.

Attached is the action alert from the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, Environmental Justice Coalition for Water and NRDC, followed by a sample letter.

Tiwicakte Cankpe Opi (Murder at Wounded Knee)
You might wonder why the Lakhota want to secede from the U.S.; one reason might have to do with the massacre of Sitanka (Big Foot) and his people on December 29, 1890 at Chankwe Opi Wakpala (Wounded Knee Creek).

BTW, since I'm from that part of the country, I can attest to how cold it can get

Wounds of Wounded Knee

Wounds of Wounded Knee still fester after more than 114 years

TIM GIAGO (NANWICA KCIJI)
2004 Knight Ridder Tribune News Service 12/20/2004

On crystal clear nights, when winter winds whistle through the hills and canyons around Wounded Knee Creek, the Lakota elders say it is so cold that one can hear the twigs snapping in the frigid air.

They called this time of the year, The Moon of the Popping Trees. It was on such a winter morning on December 29, 1890 that the crack of a single rifle brought a day of infamy that still lives in the hearts and minds of the Lakota people.

After the rifle spoke there was a pause and then the rifles and Hotchkiss guns of the Seventh Cavalry opened up on the men, women and children camped at Wounded Knee. What followed was utter chaos and madness. The thirst for the blood of the Lakota took away all common sense from the soldiers.

The unarmed Lakota fought back with bare hands. The warriors shouted to their wives, their elders and their children, run for cover, Iynkapo! Iyankapo!

FERC Final EIS Finds that Dam Removal is cheaper than relicensing
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on November 16 issued the Final Environmental Impact Statement on the relicensing of the Klamath dams, owned by billionaire Warren Buffett. The document's economic analysis shows that the removal of PacifiCorps's lower four Klamath dams would save ratepayers $7 million a year.

At the same time, Karuk Tribes’ FERC negotiator Craig Tucker criticized the staff recommendations in the Final EIS for not being consistent with the mandatory terms and conditions set forth by federal agencies last year.

“In the end, unless PacifiCorp negotiates a dam removal agreement with us, they’re looking at building ladders at every facility and providing more water to the river at JC Boyle dam. That’s the law.”

Facts about Indian Gaming mailer
From Josh Eidelson of UNITE (Hotel and casino workers union):

As you know, the more than 58,000 workers in California Indian casinos that
are affected by the standards set in these compacts need a real, enforceable
right to organize. These compacts rely on the deeply flawed Tribal Labor
Relations Ordinance (TLRO) included in the original 1999 compacts. There is
extensive documentation of harassment and intimidation of workers that have
attempted to organize at these casinos under the TLRO. It does not require
tribes to be neutral on the matter of union organizing. There are numerous
instances where tribes have sent anti-union letters, held anti-union
meetings, and conducted surveillance on workers for their union activity.
All of this happened under the TLRO system, with no real recourse.
Moreover, standard state employment policies that help protect workers in
organizing drives don't apply on sovereign land, making them even more
vulnerable. _Not one_ worker has been organized under the 1999 TLRO.
Without the 2004 standard of neutrality and card check, casino workers will
never be able to organize a union.

California Assembly Resolution Urges Feds to Restore Recognition to Winnemem Wintu Tribe

Joint Resolution Would Codify State’s De-Facto Recognition of Northern California Tribe

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Aug. 28, 2007) – In an effort to reverse decades of injustice suffered by the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, Assembly Member Jared Huffman has introduced Assembly Joint Resolution 39, which urges Congress to restore federal recognition to the tribe.

The Winnemem Wintu are fighting to restore their federally recognized status after the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), without any warning, notified them that their education benefits would be discontinued. Until then, they received benefits and treatment accorded to recognized tribes.

Rebuked by Buffett: Klamath Tribes, Fishermen and Riverkeeper petition California for relief from PacifiCorp toxin pollution.

Sacramento, CA: In an uncharacteristic deferral to regulators, billionaire Warren Buffer passed the buck last week to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and state agencies for the toxic pollution his subsidiary PacifiCorp creates in the Klamath River. Today, Klamath River Tribes, fishermen and environmental groups petitioned the California Water Resources Control Board to declare PacifiCorp a polluter, requiring the company to get a permit for toxic algae blooms proliferating in the river as a result of dams run by the utility.

“PacifiCorp’s dams and the toxins they cause are making the Klamath River unsafe for tribal members that use the river for religious ceremonies and subsistence fishing, yet the state of California has yet to declare PacifiCorp a polluter, or regulate them,” said Craig Tucker with the Karuk Tribe. “We hope California will protect Klamath residents from PacifiCorp’s pollution, as we know they are deeply committed to removing the Klamath dams and protecting salmon.”
Klamath River Tribes: "Warren Buffett missed the point"

Three Klamath River tribes, commercial fishermen and conservationists demonstrated today at the Berkshire-Hathaway shareholders meeting to ask Warren Buffett to remove four Klamath River dams. The week's events included a traditional salmon bake and brush dance, preceded by press conferences in San Francisco, Sacramento and Salt Lake City.

Omaha, NE – Members of California’s three largest Indian Tribes and allies from commercial fishing and conservation groups demonstrated today at the Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting, known as the Woodstock of Capitalism. The group is demanding the removal of four Klamath Dams owned by Berkshire subsidiary PacifiCorp. Two members of the coalition asked questions directly to Buffett and his partner Charles Munger before a crowd of 27,000 shareholders.

Tribes and Family Fishermen seek support from Warren Buffett and Berkshire Investors as they struggle to survive

Omaha, NE – Members of California’s three largest Indian Tribes and allies from commercial fishing and conservation groups continue to hold outreach events in Omaha, Nebraska in an appeal to shareholders of the company that is destroying their livelihoods and culture. Instead of familiar dance grounds, traditional healer and medicine woman Kathy McCovey prepares the materials for the ancient ritual on the banks of an unfamiliar river near a bustling downtown business district. “This is very unusual for us. We don’t typically perform ceremonies outside of our ancestral territory, but we felt we had to come and share some of our culture with the people here.”

A Phantom in Northeast Mexico: Zapatismo
Year 22 of the Struggle and 13 of the War Against Obscurity and Lying

By Alejandro de la Torre
Dossier Político

April 29, 2007

At the moment, ten EZLN commanders find themselves in three states in northeast Mexico: Baja California, Baja California Sur, and Sonora.

You read it right – ten commanders, five indigenous women and five indigenous men, of the Clandestine Revolutionary Indigenous Committee – General Command of the EZLN, the same who, after long consultations with thousands of insurgents and zapatista bases, gave the order January 1, 1994 to start the war against the national government until overthrown, then headed by Carlos Salinas de Gortari. It was the first Declaration of the Lacandona Jungle.

From that point the indigenous movement started to gain national and international respect, becoming the vanguard of the fight in defence of humanity and against the neoliberalism that threatens the very existence of the earth.
