Agribusiness Giant Westlands Moves to Kill Central Valley Salmon

Westlands Water District, the "Darth Vader of California water politics, is requesting a federal judge to order lifting restrictions on the operation of huge delta water pumps and canals from February through May, according to a news release from the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations and Water4Fish.

The move takes place as Westlands Water District, southern Calfornia water agencies, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and the California Legislature are pushing for the construction of a peripheral canal and new dams to export more water from the California Delta. If the peripheral canal is built, it is likely to result in pushing Central Valley salmon, Delta smelt, longfin smelt, green sturgeon and other fish into the abyss of extinction.

Lives in the Balance: Haiti Disaster Coup d'état Version

The Destabilization of Haiti

"Washington seeks to reinstate Haiti as a full-fledged US colony, with all the appearances of a functioning democracy. The objective is to impose a puppet regime in Port-au-Prince and establish a permanent US military presence in Haiti.

Two Very Different Peace Prizes; Two Very Different Acceptance Speeches

Recently John invited me to join your group, so this is my first diary. Since I live in a different state, my entries will have national or worldwide issues as subjects.

When Obama was given the Nobel Peace Prize, like many others I was stunned and mystified. When he delivered his acceptance speech trying to justify escalation and expansion of war, I was not only stunned but ashamed.

In contrast there was awarded an earlier, real prize earned over a long lifetime by a noted journalist who has devoted his entire career to peace with justice: John Pilger was awarded the City of Sydney, Australia Peace Prize. John's acceptance speech is in keeping with his reputation and shows the honesty of the committee in awarding him their prize.

Here is the link to the only video I have found on the net. Don't be thrown off by the title which may have been used to get it broadcast in America.

Science Friday: Apophis: The Asteroid That Will ALMOST Hit Earth

Video: The Asteroid That Will Almost Hit Earth

SAN FRANCISCO — Any number of undiscovered near-Earth objects could one day careen into the Earth, and there is a lot of talk here at the American Geophysical Union meeting about tracking them. So far, though, only one discovered object has seemed even mildly likely to hit our planet.

Afghanistan Strategy

Everyone has their favorite reason for the continue occupation of Afghanistan. I also have my explanation.

Since WWII, United States has attempted to control other country’s policies with the use of diplomacy and threats, violence, or war. Every President since FDR has threatened to use nuclear weapons at least once. United States has become more than the world’s policeman. The current phrase is “all options are on the table”. How that came about is another matter.

Of course, threats can not be used without violence or war, else the threats would not be taken seriously by the country being threatened. If the United States is defeated in a war then the threats also lack creditability.

What Empires Have Said Throughout History: "One More Surge"

A leading advisor to the U.S. military, the Rand Corporation, released a study in 2008 called "How Terrorist Groups End: Lessons for Countering al Qa'ida". The report confirms what experts have been saying for years: the war on terror is actually weakening national security.

As a press release about the study states:

"Terrorists should be perceived and described as criminals, not holy warriors, and our analysis suggests that there is no battlefield solution to terrorism."

Climate Roulette by Mark Hertsgaard, The Nation

They say that everyone who finally gets it about climate change has an "Oh, shit" moment--an instant when the full scientific implications become clear and they suddenly realize what a horrifically dangerous situation humanity has created for itself. Listening to the speeches, groundbreaking in their way, that President Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao delivered September 22 at the UN Summit on Climate Change, I was reminded of my most recent "Oh, shit" moment.

Connecting the Dots: The Axis of Evil Closes in on Iran's Nuclear Sites, while the G20 stamps on our Civil Rights

In the great global chess match, the Axis of Evil exchanges pieces with Russia towards a check-mate on Iran, while Afghanistan is set to be the proving ground of an open-ended military strategy.

The G20 crowns itself queen of the global economy, as our civil liberties are pawned off the board for the illusion of security.

If the audience is the human masses, they seem blithely disinterested in the high-stakes moves on the board and only vaguely aware that beneath the board itself Mother Nature is shaking the table, rattling the Earth and making waves.

September was yet another episode in the slow motion collision of humanity's tragic history and reality.
