Major League Baseball Players Endorse Employee Free Choice

Baseball Stars Knock It Out of the Park for Employee Free Choice

Baseball Players : afl-cio

Just in time for the World Series, 12 members of the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) have added their names to the broad coalition in support of the Employee Free Choice Act.

The players have signed a statement and appeared in print ads in Washington, D.C., papers yesterday. World Series participants Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Mark Teixeira took part. They were joined by Heath Bell, Dave Bush, LaTroy Hawkins, Torii Hunter, John Lannan, Andrew Miller, J.J. Putz, Justin Verlander and Adam Wainwright.

In a joint statement, these players say:

All Americans should have the same opportunity we’ve had—to be able to join a union without being fired and to negotiate with their employers without being penalized. Today, our country is facing some tough times. Health care costs are skyrocketing. Families are losing homes. Savings and retirement income are disappearing overnight.

Radisson Action!

Radisson Action!

We have had several negotiating sessions with the Radisson and made some progress, but there is still a lot to fight for:

The Radisson is only offering 78 cents in raises over four years, an average raise of only 19 cents per year.

They are proposing to take away a 30 cent bonus the housekeepers get for every room they clean. That would essentially be a wage cut for some the hardest-working employees.

COMPLIMENTARY BREAKFAST WITH

YESSIKA HOYOS
Recipient of the 2008 AFL-CIO Human Rights Award

Friday, September 25th, 2009 @ 8 AM
The Grand – 1215 J Street, Sacramento

Seven years ago, Colombian union leader Jorge Dario Hoyos was assassinated. But his death did not silence his family’s search for justice. His daughter, Yessika, followed in her father’s steps, risking her life in pursuit of workers’ rights and challenging the power of corporations and a government that does little to protect the rights and lives of workers.

On Thursday, September 17, 2009, the AFL-CIO presented Yessika Hoyos with the 2008 George Meany-Lane Kirkland Human Rights Award for “her extraordinary courage, her dedication to the cause of workers’ rights in Colombia and her commitment to ending impunity for those responsible.”

Proxy Access: SEC Request for Comment, the Right of Shareholders to Nominate Directors, Big Deal for Unions

Proxy Access: the Rights of Shareholders to Nominate Directors, Big Deal for Unions, Pension Funds, and Institutional Investors, Could Transform the Corporate Board Room
by Andrew H. Dral

The following letter was sent by me to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in response to their request for comment on the "proxy access" rule. If you want to make a difference send them your opinion, just upload your letter at "www.sec.gov." The Chamber of Commerce is doing a full court press to water down this rule, any comments you make will help our cause to wrench control away from the corportocracy. This rule will give shareholders more power to replace entrenched corporate board members. My letter, included below, is on the SEC Web site.

SEC Headquarters

Washington, DC 20549

Dear SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro,

In theory, our business texts tell us that shareholders own the corporation. The corporate board of directors works for the interests of the shareholders. Decisions by the board benefit shareholders. Like, so many other fallacies in our society, this is a blatant lie. As corporate boards across our land prove every day, the board of directors works for the interests of management. They promote unwarranted -- out of sight -- management salaries. Its members maintain their status by being docile puppy dogs, and they remain on the board at the pleasure of management. In other words, the current boards are lackeys and lapdogs for management. The crisis in corporate America orchestrated by overly aggressive, unethical, greedy, and corrupt management teams at Enron, WorldCom, Tyco, AIG, Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, Washington Mutual, and Adelphia could have been avoided with boards that were engaged in the operation and long-term value of the business.

CANCELED: UNITE HERE Rally at the Sheraton

CANCELED (07/13): UNITE HERE reached an agreement with the Sheraton on Saturday, so this rally has been canceled. Congrats to all the workers!!

As many of you know, we have been in negotiations with the Sheraton Grand since March, and we are now at a critical point in our negotiations with the hotel. The support we have received from the community and our labor allies has paid off at the negotiating table. Please join on July 16th for our biggest rally yet and let the Sheraton know you will keep coming back until they offer the workers a fair contract!

RALLY WITH SACRAMENTO SHERATON WORKERS

Three years ago, our community came out in force to push that Sacramento hotel jobs should be living wage jobs. With your support, hotel workers won their best contracts ever - first at the Sheraton Grand, then at four other hotels.

Now, the same workers are fighting for affordable family healthcare. They need our help, and they deserve our support:

RALLY WITH SACRAMENTO SHERATON WORKERS
