Angry yet? Banksters awarded bonuses more than six times higher than actual economy growth rate

You got to admit President Obama obfuscates embarrassing facts and pays off his supporters as well as any politician since Huey Long.

He slams health insurance companies, while endorsing heath care reforms that would compel thirty more million Americans to buy their policies or face a poll tax.

Now he slams the bankers for paying themselves $140 billion in bonuses.

Those bonuses were "earned" trading derivatives and other engineered products [watch these two videos] with the more than $2 trillion in cheap credit provided by the Federal Reserve, TARP and other Washington largess. Meanwhile, bankers denied worthy homeowners opportunities to refinance mortgages and solid small businesses credit.

    How much is $140 billion?

Elderly Homeless gentlemen beaten last night

From Tamie Dramer:

Hello all,

I went to the Safe Ground outpost this afternoon to bring the homeless pioneers a hot lunch of fried potatoes and chorizo and tortillas. I signed in and at first all seemed lovely and peaceful as usual. And It was- for the most part, except a Bee reporter was there, which always causes a little buzz, ...And then I saw them...

Two 60+ year old little old men with their heads hanging down. They were sitting side by side in cast off dining room chairs with sad swollen cut up faces. Not the kind of sad disfigured faces of your average homeless man who's face is ravaged by time, sun and living on the streets. No. These faces were ravaged by the fists of three young healthy and probably housed adults for kicks and giggles. Their faces were black and blue with their eyes swollen shut and blood from fresh cuts on their lips and the split open skin on their eyebrows. They were jumped last night on the streets of Sacramento while searching for a place to bed down for the night. It's the kind of thing that when you least expect it, hits you in the gut- like they must've been, and instantly the tears come and the rage boils up, and knowing that there's nothing you can do- no matter how many meals you cook, no matter how many days you spend trying to convince people that there needs to be a safe place for homeless people to be able sleep at night, -that there's nothing you can do to protect these little old men right now from the horrifying cruelty of people who think the homeless are less than human. It makes you feel as hopeless as these poor old men.

A Sacramento attorney who has championed the rights of homeless people is opening his private property to campers who need a place to sleep at night.

Mark Merin, who for years has challenged the city's and county's treatment of the homeless, is leasing a parcel of land in downtown Sacramento to an association of people seeking to establish a legal "safe ground" campsite. Three advocacy organizations are leading the "safe ground" effort.

SACRAMENTO CITIZENS FACE CITATION & ARREST FOR THE CRIME OF CAMPING

Sacramento police, at the direction of City Manager Ray Carriage, plan to cite and arrest the more than 100 Homeless People who have organized into the SafeGround Sacramento Community. The self-governed group had been peacefully staying on public property adjacent to the VOA on Bannon Street for the past nine days until police rousted them from this site in an early dawn raid after threatening them with citation and/or arrest.

Meet at Loaves & Fishes

"Safe Ground" is…

§ A secure location, sanctioned by the city & operated by the residents
§ A place with clean water, toilets, and garbage collection
§ A place where residents can be free from harassment and danger
§ A place where homeless people can access services they need to turn their lives around

Every day, more than 1,200 homeless men, women, children and families are struggling to make it on Sacramento County’s streets.

Homelessness is not a new problem. But a bad economy means more people on the streets, and fewer government dollars to help them.

Safe Ground Rally - Homeless People Deserve a Safe Place to Stay

Homeless people deserve a safe place to stay.

We believe everyone deserves SAFE GROUND!

April 21, 2009, Tuesday, 2 pm
Sacramento State Capital

There are over 1200 people sleeping outside every night in Sacramento and the numbers are growing! Shelters are full, so for many the options are few: sleep in a car, if you have one, or break the law and sleep illegally on the streets.

This is unfair and unjust!

Everyone should have a safe place where they can go at night and sleep without fear. That’s why we need a safe ground. Sacramento needs a safe “legalized” campground where homeless folks can have clean water, bathrooms, and trash services until our City, County and State are willing and able to provide adequate shelters and affordable housing for the growing numbers of homeless folks.

We need you to join us on April 21, Tuesday at 2pm on the Capital Steps for the:

Sacramento Tent City: The Second Great Depression?

Loaves & Fishes, the Sacramento Homeless Organizing Committee, Francis House and other groups have started a "Safe Ground" campaign to make the current situation of the homeless better, according to Joan Burke of Loaves and Fishes. The homeless camp that is portrayed in the linked photos is at nearly the same spot where a giant Hooverville was located during the great depression. The camp is growing by up to 50 people per day.

Dear Friend of Loaves & Fishes,

A photographer from Getty Images, Justin Sullivan, has done a photo essay on Sacramento's Tent City. The pictures are very concrete and specific; he juxtaposes them with Depression era photos of Sacramento homeless encampments. Oprah: Homeless in Sacramento

Good morning, all – earlier today, Sister Libby told our Loaves & Fishes work group about this Wednesday’s program. Most of us don’t watch daytime TV, but may want to make an exception this week. She mentioned a family that became part of Family Promise, one of our UU commitments to homeless families.

Sacramento on Oprah Wednesday
A segment on Sacramento will air on The Oprah Winfrey Show Wednesday, a publicist for the show confirmed today.

A production crew including Carmichael native Lisa Ling was in town last week taping material related to the recession and its effects on people.

The taping focused on a family which lost its home as a result of the housing crises and looked at the situation of the homeless in Sacramento.

The show airs locally on KCRA 3 at 4 p.m.

From: Joan Burke, Loaves & Fishes

Dear Friend and Supporter,

It’s been a tough winter on North C Street . We’ve all felt the chill of many below freezing nights and the sadness of realizing that the number of homeless people who must come to Loaves & Fishes for survival services continues to rise. It’s been a tough winter everywhere with widespread unemployment, economic uncertainty and fear.

Come MARCH & RALLY in support of the people of Sacramento who live outdoors in this cold weather! The homeless are seeking a safe and legal place to stay. Join us to show solidarity for the need of a stable place for people to pitch their tents-with port-a-potties and garbage service. All people need housing, and such a place would provide the bare minimum emergency space to erect tents- a human right that has been denied to the poorest among us for much too long! The March begins at Loaves and Fishes at 1pm and will end with a rally at Cesar Chavez Park at 2pm. Stand up and speak out!
