You are invited to the annual dinner of the Sacramento chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility on Sunday, October 18 at the California State University, Sacramento Alumni Center at 6000 J STreet. The doors will open at 5:30 pm and dinner will begin at 6 pm. Our keynote speaker will be journalist Mark Hertsgaard whose talk is titled "On the way to Copenhagen." Mr. Hertsgaard will talk about the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, now regarded as among the most important international gatherings ever held. The conference will attempt to reach a global agreement to halt and reverse global warming quickly enough to avoid catastrophic amounts of climate change. In the talk Mr. Hertsgaard will draw some parallels (and distinctions) between climate change and nuclear weapons as global threats.

Mr. Hertsgaard is the author of five books that have been translated into sixteen languages. He covers climate change for Vanity Fair, The Nation, Time and Die Zeit and has written for many of the world's leading newspapers and magazines. His forthcoming book is Living Through the Storm: Our Future Under Global Warming. The evening will also include a silent auction, musical entertainment by jazz pianist Reggie Graham, and, of course, lots of good company with fellow activists.

Individual tickets are $60 ($30 for students) and include the dinner and the talk; tickets for the talk only are $20 ($10 for students). Reservations may be made online at the PSR/Sacramento website with payment by mail or by credit card. Please e-mail info@sacpsr.org or call 916 955-6333 if you have questions, would like to reserve a table, or if you would like to contribute a silent auction item.

Proceeds from the dinner will support PSR chapter activities including our annual high school Scholarship Essay Contest. This year we received 144 essays and awarded over $10,000 in college scholarships to bright, articulate local students who will be tomorrow's leaders and decision-makers. Other chapter activities during the past year have included co-sponsoring events on nuclear disarmament, health care, and climate change; participation in press conferences and forums on issues of war and militarism, universal health care, and gun violence; and meeting with the staff of congressional representatives both in the Sacramento area and in Washington DC to advocate for nuclear disarmament, SMART security (PSRs Sensible Multilateral American Response to Terrorism), protection of the environment, and universal health care. We have also continued to have periodic chapter meetings, open to the general public, at which local experts have spoken on topics including the situation in Iran, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the environmental cleanup program at the former McClellan Air Force Base.

I hope that you will join us at the dinner. Together, we can work for a safer and healthier world!
