Ashcroft Protested in Rocklin
Tom Dillon organized a protest of John Ashcroft's appearance in Rocklin on Thursday, May 5th.

Thank you Tom for making those signs and putting together this effort!!

Below is an excerpt from the Sacramento Bee article:

But Ashcroft's visit was not universally applauded, and a few protesters waved signs reading, "John Ashcroft go home. You are not welcome here." And "Torture is not an American value."

Attorney Stella Levy, with the Sacramento Coalition to Stop the Patriot Act, called Ashcroft the "poster boy for the assault on the Constitution." On Wednesday, Levy and other area residents descended on Rep. Doris Matsui's downtown office. The group called on the Sacramento Democrat to vote to allow Patriot Act provisions it opposes to expire.

"It would signal a turn toward protecting civil liberties instead of tossing them out the window," said a leader of the coalition, Ellen Schwartz of Rosemont.

Several members of the Tahoe basin chapter of the Vagos motorcycle club participated in the meeting. William Stratton, the chapter president and a North Sacramento resident, said he believes the Patriot Act is being used, in conjunction with anti-gang laws, to unfairly crack down on bikers.

"Our forefathers fought for these rights," said Stratton, who goes by the name "Wes," jutting his index finger, adorned with a thick, silver skull ring, into the air for effect. "It doesn't matter what race or religion you are. You have a right to be protected under those rights."
